A COMMUNITY has rallied together to support four children who have been orphaned after their father passed away from Covid-19.
55-year-old Miguel Plangca, originally from the Phillipines but who has lived in Ireland for over 20 years, lost his wife six years ago and was a single father to his children Mikee, Michael, John and Chekie.
The children have now tragically lost their only remaining parent after Mr Plangca contracted the respiratory illness Covid-19, sadly passing away after battling the disease for 41 days in ICU.
The children, who lived in Co Kildare with their father and attended local schools, are now under the care of their aunt, but the entire Kildare and Philippine community have rallied to support them further.
A GoFundMe page was set up by Aina Conway, President of the Kildare Filipino community, which urged people to pray for Mr Plangca's children after their terrible losses, and set an initial €5,000 fundraising target.
But as both the Irish and Filipino community became aware of the children's tragic story, they rallied, and donations have far surpassed the original target-- currently sitting at over €182,000 at the time of writing.
"I am so sorry for your loss," one woman, Sarah Smith, wrote on the page. "But your mam and dad are so very proud of you. Look after each other."
"My heart goes out to you all at this very sad time," another message reads.
"May your Dad rest in Peace. Hope you find comfort in each other, your auntie Fely and all your family. Thinking of you all, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Take care."
Mr Plangca was much-loved and respected in the community, with the Philippine Consulate Dublin penning a touching tribute to the man, who was described as "a quiet but very giving man who was well-loved and will be deeply missed".
"Our hearts go out to his children, relatives, friends, and colleagues in this time of sorrow."
